Dr. Wachs has undergone extensive training prior to beginning the practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1989. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees at Cornell University. He obtained his D.M.D. degree at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the Dental Honor Society.
After graduation, Dr. Wachs completed a General Practice Residency in Dentistry at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, now known as Jacobi Medical Center. He then completed a three-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center – Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Once eligible, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, after successful completion of written and oral board certification examinations. Dr. Wachs continues to increase his knowledge and skill continuously as he participates in Continuing Medical Education activities.
Dr. Wachs has been active in the didactic and clinical teaching of Oral Surgery since he entered the profession. Over the years, he has given numerous lectures to various groups. He currently maintains academic/teaching appointments.
He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York Medical College and a Clinical Instructor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a faculty member of the General Practice Residency in Dentistry and Family Medicine Residency programs at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center.
He was actively involved for over twelve years in the GPR program at Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility. While at Coler-Goldwater, he was a member of the Downstate Dental Directors, participating in activities related to the teaching of dentistry in Residency programs.

Dr. Wachs plays an active role at the hospitals where he works. He is currently Chief of the Section of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Phelps. Dr. Wachs is on the Quality Review Committee, Multi-Disciplinary Peer Review Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Bylaws Committee at Phelps. He is involved in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement projects to maximize patient care and safety.
Dr. Wachs was the Chairman of the institution-wide Invasive Procedure Review Committee at Coler-Goldwater for a number of years. He was also a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Medical Executive Council.
Dr. Wachs also plays a role in organized dentistry, helping to advance both patient care and dental practice.
He has chaired the Governmental Affairs Committee for the Ninth District Dental Society. He is currently the Vice-Chair of this committee and is a member of the Dental Health Planning and Hospital Dentistry Committee.
He is a participant with Donated Dental Services, which tends to the essential and comprehensive dental care needs of our nation’s most vulnerable people; disabled, elderly or medically-compromised individuals who cannot afford necessary treatment nor get public aid.
Dr. Wachs is the designated on-call Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for the United States Open Tennis Tournament.
